Reducing Allergens at Home

woman dusting for allergens

Allergy sufferers may feel helpless at times when allergens such as dust, pollen and mold are harming their quality of life. However, it is possible to reduce those bothersome symptoms like runny noses and watery eyes!

Here are some good cleaning habits to help with allergies year-round:

Keep your bed and mattress clean

A dust cover is a must-have as mattresses are a haven for dust mites over time. Regularly clean your bedframe and your headboard, especially if either is fabric covered.

Dust smarter

Avoid spreading dust on areas you just cleaned by cleaning from top to bottom. Also, avoid brushing the dust away with a feather duster or cloth. Damp microfiber cloths help trap the dust, not just move it around. Be sure  to clean, blinds, curtains and ceiling fans.

Wash and cover pillows

There’s nothing quite like the anticipation of getting some rest and snuggling into your pillow.

Unfortunately, you’re not the only one who loves pillows. Dust mites love them too! A less than comforting fact is that pillows and mattresses get heavier over time from dust mites and their droppings!

Washable pillowcases are a must. Be sure to wash them every 3 weeks. Pillows should be washed or dry cleaned every 3-4 months depending on the kind of pillow you have.

Limit how much pollen gets inside

As much as possible, keep the windows closed to avoid pollen being blown inside. Remove your shoes outside, or place a mat at the door where you can wipe your feet. Keep inside temperatures cool to help prevent humidity to discourage dust mites and mold.

Invest in the right vacuum cleaner for the job

Not all vacuums are created equal. Bagless vacuums with HEPA filters tend to work best to remove allergens like dust, pet hair and dander. If possible, dust and mop wood and other hard flooring. Also know that these surfaces are preferable to carpets for those with serious allergies.
